Illinois Found Money

Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois State Treasurer, is trying to locate the owners of cash and other assets. Fill out search form to see if the state has found money waiting for you.

The state already has returned millions to owners of unclaimed financial assets. Generally, these assets have remained unclaimed by the owner for a period of five years and fall under the jurisdiction of the Unclaimed Property Act. Unclaimed assets have been turned over to the state by corporations, partnerships, financial institutions, federal, state and local governments, utilities and charitable organizations after they were unable to locate the owner.

Tips, How you can prevent your financial assets from being turned over to the state. These steps are considered owner activity, and will prevent your assets from becoming abandoned:

It is important to keep a list of institutions, which hold or manage your money and make sure they have your current address. Keep accurate and current records of bank accounts, insurance policies, stock certificates, utility and rent deposits and safe deposit box locations. Keep accounts active through customer-initiated contact with the holders of your property through activity on your account, (not merely the accrual of interest). Cash all checks for dividends, wages, refunds, and insurance settlements. Notify a family member or trusted advisor of the location of your records. Have your interest posted in your passbook. Call the institution and tell them to note your call in their records. Notify all institutions every time you move.

You can check on the internet if there is unclaimed money. Currently it only contains names from our most recent publication. In the near future they will have a more complete database available on website.
